Witch of the Wood

By Dr. Mary Crowell © 2001

Though many have looked, it is few that have seen
The Lady who lives in the wood
Her forest a mystery, silent and serene
Sole witness to centuries stood
Maybe you’ll look for her there
Concealed in her green leafy lair
Confused by her glamour, you’ll wander in a daze
Although your intentions are good.

I seek the Witch of the Wood, Lady of Forest and Glen
Dark things howl at the gate threatening women and men.

Should you come to visit the heart of her land
With ravens and portents in mind
Make certain you carry a gift for her in hand
And maybe this lady you’ll find
Maybe you’ll call to her then
While wand’ring the forest and fen
Convinced that you’re worthy and ready for the truth
You pray that her welcome is kind

I seek the Witch of the Wood, Lady of Forest and Glen
Dark things howl at the gate threatening women and men.

One day there are those who will come as Foretold
To stand by her circle of stone
And bring her their questions
The prophecies unfold
They hope they’ll hear answers intoned.
Maybe she’ll speak to them then
Enlighten the women and men
They won’t be expecting the questions she will raise
She’ll smile and then leave them alone.

I seek the Witch of the Wood, Lady of Forest and Glen
Dark things howl at the gate threatening women and men.

Though many have looked, it is few that have seen
The Lady who lives in the Wood
Her forest a mystery, silent and serene
Sole witness to centuries stood.
